Scarlet Minx…

While working as a wedding dressmaker at award winning bridal wear and accessory retailer, Richard Designs in Cambridge, Scarlet was surrounded by their wonderful headdress team. Here, not only did she learn to make beautiful silk wedding gowns, she also picked up many headwear skills too, which she would practice at home at the weekends, but it was nothing more than a hobby.

After a number of years, Scarlet gave up her dressmaking job to raise her son, Will. While settling into mother hood, she took the plunge and picked up the needle and thread once again and started dressmaking from home. She would make all things from wedding dresses to dance costumes, and it was during this time that she found the love of all things millinery. Scarlet started getting special fascinator requests, where she was asked to match the dresses she was making, using the fabric off cuts where possible. A lot of the dresses she made required many skills that lend themselves nicely to millinery, so she gave it a go. And now she is obsessed! So much so she decided to take two days out of dressmaking a week, to work and train at the Mad Hatter, Surrey. Since, she has taken part in the Katherine Elizabeth millinery challenge 2020, where they made 1940's inspired felt headpieces, and she won 2nd prize. It was such a fun and inspiring experience to be part of, Scarlet joined the Millinery and Business Academy, where she was taught all the traditional millinery techniques by award winning milliner Katherine Elizabeth.
